A Driver campaign comes

year in a row and the Labor

Safety Belt Usage Reaches
Historical High
U.S. Transportation Secretary
Norman Y. Mineta announced
this week that safety belt
use reached the highest
level in the nation’s history
- - 79 percent. The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration's
(NHTSA) nationwide survey
was conducted after the
massive May "Click
It or Ticket" mobilization.
The agency says the increase
in belt use this year will
translate into more than
1,000 lives saved each year
and the costs to society
are reduced by at least
$3.2 billion. States with
primary safety belt laws
report higher use (83 percent
average) than those with
secondary laws. Pick-up
truck occupants registered
the lowest usage rate (69
percent) among passenger
vehicles. “Seat belts are
the number one defense against
a drunk driver, said Wendy
J. Hamilton, MADD national
president. "We are
so glad that Americans are
buckling up more than every
before. Now it's time for
all states to pass primary
seat belt laws so that we
will be even safer on the
roadways."
